Dublin has a wonderful variety of sports facilities to suit all tastes from running and swimming to soccer and GAA. Many of these facilities are built and managed by Dublin City Council.
 
Sports Promotion and Recreation
Dublin City Council is promoting mainstream Sport and Recreation amongst all the citizens of Dublin, by providing a range of activities aimed at getting people more physically active. These programmes are for all the citizens of Dublin City, with a special focus on new immigrant communities, children under ten, older people, people with disabilities, women and girls.

What do Sport and Recreation Officers do?
  • Organise sustainable sports programmes for everyone, especially the five targeted groups, involving them in the design and planning process.
  • Work with National Governing Bodies of Sport, Irish Sports Council, Health Service Executive, Garda Siochana, Dublin City Sports Network and other key partners.
  • Assist sports clubs and groups in applying for funding.
  • Access training for coaches and volunteers.
  • Assist Sport Clubs in the development of sustainable structures.
  • Work in partnership with schools, community groups and centres to increase access to sports and recreational facilities
Sports Development
Dublin City Council is using sport as an effective tool in engaging young people, at risk of drug misuse, into more structured and positive activities.
There are currently eleven Sports Development Officers (S.D.O's) and two Senior Sports Development Officers (S.S.D.O’s).

  • Organise sports programmes for youth at risk, involving them in the design and planning process.
  • Work with National Governing Bodies of Sport, Youth Service Projects, Garda Special Projects, Outreach Youth Workers and Local Drugs Task Forces.
  • Assist sports clubs and groups in applying for funding.
  • Access training for coaches and volunteers.
  • Work in partnership with schools, community groups and centres to increase access for young people to sports and recreational facilities.
