  Campaigning

One of the key objectives of the Federation of Irish Sports is to seek to influence the development of effective sports policy. The stance taken by the Federation of Irish Sports is at all times reflective of the challenges facing our membership in relation to the delivery of sport.

Some of the legal and policy changes the Federation is seeking to secure include:
  • The recognition of "the advancement of sport" as a charitable purpose;
  • An extension of the projects in relation to which tax relief may be obtained on donations to sporting bodies; and
  • The provision of multi-annual funding.
Other areas of concern to the Federation and its members in relation to sports policy include:
  • Maintaining level of funding to the Irish Sports Council during recessionary times
  • Continued emphasis on funding for capital sports projects as opposed to current spending (e.g. funds for coaches/development officers);
  • Need for National Facilities Audit & Strategy (currently being carried out by the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism)
  • Improved co-operation between government departments and agencies in the areas of health, sport & education.
The Federation has made a number of submissions in relation to government statements of strategy and other policy documents including:
  • Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism Statement of Strategy 2008-2010
  • Irish Sports Council Strategic Plan 2009-2011
  • Taskforce on Childhood Obesity
  • Taskforce on Active Citizenship
